mabel's home is brutally and unexpectedly destroyed. Lost, terrified and alone on a dark rainy evening on the Plymouth docks, Mabel is befriended by a French seaman. Robert takes her aboard his ship, bound for the northern coast of France. Mabel and her friends soon discover a terrible plot to deprive Morgane, Robert's grand-mother, of her beautiful stone house on the edge of the sea. Gravestone, a corrupt and unscrupulous builder, is ready to persecute and blackmail anyone who stands in his way. But the friends put their heads and hearts together to save Morgane's home.

Although she has been adopted into the loving community of Roscoff, Mabel both misses and worries about her family.

elle avait couru, poussée par la peur et aveuglée par les larmes, pendant ce qui avait semblé des heures. Il pleuvait maintenant et la nuit tombait. Les rues de Plymouth, habituellement si claires et accueillantes, lui paraissaient soudain étrangères. Elle ne s'était jamais aventurée jusqu'au port : sa mère le lui avait toujours interdit. Prise de panique, elle avait continué à courir jusqu'à ce que ses petites côtes lui semblent sur le point d'éclater sous l'effort, et qu'elle n'arrive plus à respirer. Elle s'arrêta derrière une poubelle afin de s'abriter et de se reposer un peu. Mabel prit conscience que sa vie, qui avait été protégée et tellement remplie d'amour jusqu'à maintenant, venait de changer. Leur mère les avait préparés à l'éventualité d’une séparation, mais aucun d'entre eux n'aurait pu imaginer que celle-ci serait aussi brutale et cruelle.

lindsay Trentinella was born in the rolling hills of Malvern, England, where she studied at Sussex University in Brighton.

With a Masters degree in English, she now lives in France, where she is teaching English as a foreign language. Her aim has always been to impart her own love of her mother tongue to her students and to encourage them to go one day and discover for themselves all the richness of English-speaking countries. She has written pedagogical books for teachers; however, this is her first fiction book for youth in which she pays homage to her country of adoption and to the French language.
