pied Droit et Pied Gauche se tenaient serrés l'un contre l'autre, au fond de leur vieille chaussure. Pied Droit était calme et blanc comme la neige. Pied Gauche, potelé et multicolore, rêvait d'aventures. Il faisait encore nuit. Au loin, un soupçon de rose teintait l'horizon. Pied Gauche se réveilla soudain et secoua son frère :
— Pied Droit, lève-toi ! Je veux te parler.
— Oh ! laisse-moi dormir, grommela le pied blanc, se retournant dans son sommeil.
— Allez, debout ! Mais lève-toi ! insista Pied Gauche, de plus en plus rouge, en écrasant les orteils de son frère.
— Ce que tu peux être casse-pieds quand tu t'y mets ! grogna Pied Droit.
Les deux frères sortirent ensemble dans l'air vif du petit matin. Le pied coloré gambadait en avant, son frère blanc traînait en arrière. Pied Gauche s'arrêta enfin. Ils grimpèrent sur une roche plate.
— Écoute, Pied Droit, commença Pied Gauche d'une voix ferme, je veux partir.
— Comment ça, partir ? s'inquiéta Pied Droit.
